history:
Elijah had a relatively normal childhood in Florida; he had a middle-class family that loved him and treated him well. Under their treatment, he flourished and did well in school. A gentle and caring boy, he made plenty of friends - however, as he grew, he became less outwardly friendly and lost many, though keeping the closest of them. By 16, he had decided to be a doctor, and upon graduation went to a prestigious college.
It was there he met her.
Rain was a beautiful and self-reliant woman, more focused on living life fully than anything else. Despite the differences in their personalities, Elijah was transfixed by her. He talked to her and they slowly became friends. Despite his attraction to her, she refused to be anything more... until one night, when after a large amount of alcohol (unusual for Elijah,) it slipped. Though neither of them remembered the night, the consequences were real. Rain announced she was pregnant. Elijah offered to support the baby, but she would hear none of it - she didn't want a baby, she didn't want to marry him, she wasn't ready for any of this. Despite her protests, she had an abortion.
Ashamed and heartbroken, Elijah switched colleges to Earl U, the first college to accept his transfer. There, he finished his schooling and began interning at the local hospital. Luckily for him, a doctor was retiring in the adjoining family practice around that time - his hard work enabled him to get his office and start his true calling as a pediatrician. He still felt a sting of pain at the many beautiful children coming through his practice, but knew better to linger in the past. That is, until Nathan came along.
The pain-addicted boy and his crazy behavior has mostly ceased to phase the man, but he knows in his heart that his feelings for him are quite unprofessional - he cares deeply for Nathan, and does much more for him than a normal doctor would. He can't really explain why he feels so protective of him, but he tries not to question it too much.
