Lorena stared pointedly at the bubbling mess in her sink, hands on her hips as she watched it multiply. What had she done wrong, again? She honestly couldn't think of what she had put in to mess this up.... a little too much of something, maybe? Maybe the materials were tainted.
Honestly, if the government wasn't so stingy about letting people buy dangerous chemicals, she wouldn't have to deal with those little shits.
The chemicals bubbled over the counter onto the floor of her trailer, hissing at the contact. She jumped back with a squeak. "Guess I should change out of my sandals!" She said, giggling a little at her own joke. She looked around the small block for her shoes before wandering outside to find them on the doorstep.
"Aww man! They're wet!"

Alois sighed as he sat in the cruiser, looking over the case he was about to face. All he could see was a long line of fires and lack of control with explosives. He could feel the tension in his head building. She was a chemist. Great. That certainly didn't help. More importantly, the police had tracked down a purchase of restricted chemicals from her. That couldn't be good. He stepped out of the car and dusted himself off, fidgeting a little. He still wasn't used to the uniform, after all this time. It still made his skin crawl.
Headed to the door of the trailer, Alois did a quick check to make sure all of his weapons were on him. He shouldn't need them, Ms. Ruiz didn't have a history of being violent. Of course, no one really liked being arrested, if it came to that. He was about to knock on the door when Lorena came out, causing Alois to step back in surprise.
"Ah- Are you Ms. Ruiz?" Alois took a second to peek behind her to see if he could see anything inside before directing his gaze back to Lorena.

Lorena blinked, locking eyes with the officer before her before breaking into a smile. "Lorena Ruiz, at your service," she said, sitting down on the cement step and dumping the water out of her tennis shoes. She slipped into them and tied them without bothering to put on socks. "You can call me Lorena, though, if you want. Never was much for this prefix/title business."
Standing up, she smiled and held out her hand to shake. "What's your name, and what can I do for you?" She asked amicably. Suddenly, a small BOOM came from behind her, shaking the frame of the house slightly. Lorena giggled. "Oopsie!" she muttered, looking at the mess. "Didn't think that was too terribly explosive." A smoke leaked out the windows and side door. The substance may or may not have been toxic.

Alois blinked. Lorena was quite... Cheery. Especially for seeing a cop on her doorstep. He watched her put her shoes on, then gave her a firm handshake. "My name is Alois. The police has found that you have recently purchased --" He was cut off by a small but rather firm and near BOOM, his gaze immediately shifting behind Lorena. He pulled her out of the house as he radio'd (apostrophes are cool) for a hazmat team or anything that could help with this, then spoke to Lorena.
"Lorena, I regret to inform you that you are under arrest."
He paused and looked back in the trailer, then back to her. "If you come without a struggle we can get you off and on your way with nothing more than a warning." It was a little less than the truth, but he could make it happen with enough talking. More importantly, he had to get her away from the trailer in case the substance she had bought was more dangerous than she seemed to think, and to get it taken care of by whomever the police sent to clean it up. Lorena laughed as she was pulled away, fanning the smoke out of her eyes with her free hand. "Ah, figured that would happen. Sucks, not having university supplies! Have to buy the illegal shit to get anything fun done." she said, calming down enough to look at him seriously. "You should really lighten those restrictions." As if he could really do anything about it.
"I'll come with you." She said, free of all resistance. "Might wanna get that gas cleared up quick though. It shouldn't be too bad once it ventilates out but I wouldn't want it all up in my trailer, when I come back. Little unsafe. Also flammable. Yet again, god knows what was adulterating my materials..." She continued prattling on aimlessly as she was taken away, seemingly incapable of distress. "... Nice to meet you by the way, Alois. Pretty name."

"I am very sure you know that I can't do anything about the restrictions of controlled substances, Lorena."
He gently navigated her to the car and let her into the back seat, speaking before closing the door. "Do not worry. Your home will be cleaned up and safe when you get back. The utmost care will be taken and you won't even know it was ever there, except for, perhaps, a few misplaced or missing things. ...And thank you. I have always been quite fond of it." In some ways, Alois felt bad for this. Other than her safety, he would set her out to do what she pleased. But he had to keep a respectable reputation with the police force, lest he'd be cast back into prison. The drive to the station was not long. Alois took it in silence, though Lorena might have said a word or two. More than anything he wanted to finish this up as quickly as he could. He let Lorena out of the car once they arrived and escorted her in. "Please sit here, Lorena. I have some paperwork to fill out and then I'll need to have a talk with you." He said it gently, pointing to a chair not far away from Ian, who had been brought in under similar charges. Alois was slightly upset to see Ian in the station, sitting hunched over with his elbows on his knees, hands clasped together, head hanging down. Before going to fill Lorena's paperwork, he dropped to one knee next to him, speaking quiet enough the other officers couldn't hear him. "What are you doing, getting caught again? You usually do a good job of making them think it's the gangs." Ian gave Alois a shrug, not even lifting his head. Alois tried again. "Not everyone has the expertise in explosives as you do..." His eyes flickered to Lorena for a moment, as if he had thought of something, but he looked back at Ian and placed a hand firmly on his shoulder, causing Ian to look at him. "I'll get you back to the streets. But try to keep the police off your tail. I can only keep you out of trouble for so long, Ian." Ian nodded and resumed staring at the ground as Alois went to go fill Lorena's paperwork out and retrieve Ian's backpack. [/blockquote]

Lorena's trip to the police HQ was spent in mostly silence as she tried to sort out her situation to herself, wondering what exactly had gotten into the chemicals. When they arrived, she obeyed quietly, lost in her own world briefly before she noticed Ian.
Hell if she wasn't going to eavesdrop a little. That boy looked pretty damn interesting. Having heard the magical word "explosives," she scooted closer after Alois left, loudly scraping her chair across the floor until she was seated very close to the man in question. "Hello! What're you here for? Anything interesting?" she said with a cheery smile. "I just got pulled in for chemical violations. They have to clean up my house, too. I'd probably die if I went back now, depending on what was contaminating it. Really, I can't think of any logical reason to dilute any of those ingredients with anything, other than stupid money issues. Fuck smugglers." At this point she was mostly talking to herself again, but she did so staring at Ian. "What's with the mask?"

Ian looked up to Lorena as he spoke to him, promptly taking a scoot away from her to get a little distance between the two. He lowered his head again, trying to ignore her as she spoke. He hoped that she would shut up and leave him alone before too long. At the mention of the mask, he looked back up to her and shrugged, almost as if to say, "Well, why not?"
He unlaced his hands and pointed to himself, then put his hands together and then pulled them apart -- BOOM. Explosives. That's why he was here. Whether she could put two and two together was an issue he didn't feel like dealing with. While he was at it, he might as well convey he was a mute. He put his hand to where his mouth would be behind the mask and brought it out, then motioned no. As soon as she understood he was mute, he placed his elbows back onto his knees, but continued looking at her, his gaze concealed under his hair. [/blockquote]

Lorena nodded at the man, leaning back a little to view his hand signs better. She understood them well enough. "Interesting," she said. "Quite interesting. You seem like a cool person, especially if you blow things up. Blowing things up is the best, especially when you find creative ways to do it. Wouldn't you say?" She tapped the side of her chair, smiling. What a fun addition to a typical evening. "What's your name?" she said, then paused, realizing he couldn't respond. She dug in her deep overall pocket to pull out a crumpled receipt and a pen with cracked casing. "I'm Lorena."

Ian scratched behind his ear. Despite her rather cheery disposition and talkative manner, Lorena really didn't seem to be that bad. He could put up with her, sure. As long as she didn't try to live with him or something. He took the pen and receipt, writing "Ian"
in his messy, half-cursive scrawl. He also wrote "Makel" on the receipt, holding up one finger to Lorena, asking her to wait. From a pocket in his cargo pants he produced a kitten, his little girl. He held her close and gave her a good scratch under the chin, then set her down so she could romp on the floor a little. Makel pawed and played with Ian's fingers a little, then romped her way over to Lorena and pawed at the laces of the wet sneakers, fully content with playing away. She would accept any and all pets with a playful bat of her paws and a gentle nip. Ian smiled under his mask - though it would go unnoticed - and let Makel do what she wanted between them. The kitten was his world. It wasn't long until he held a hand out to Lorena for a handshake, the proper "nice to meet you". [/blockquote]

Lorena had only enough self control to stop herself from squealing loudly at the small kitten. "Kitty! You're a pretty kitty," she cooed softly, gently petting her with a goofy grin on her face. Animals were her favorite thing, next to science.
Giggling as Makel played with her wet sneakers, she looked back up and gave Ian's hand a firm shake. "It's nice to meet you too, Ian." She said, then looked back down at the cat briefly, warmth in her eyes. "And you too, Makel. Here's hoping they let us out soon, with no bullshit. Though I think I'll be sitting here a while myself, while they get hazmat crews..." She briefly considered asking him where he got his chemicals for explosives, but this didn't seem like the place, even to her hazy social logic. "Would you like to get some coffee after this?" Not that she had the slightest idea how Ian would go about drinking it with that mask on.

Makel enjoyed the pets and playfully pawed at Lorena's hand, maybe nipping her, then resumed playing ferociously with her sneakers once she shook Ian's hand. At the mention of bullshit, Ian sort of waved his hand, meaning it wouldn't be too long. With Alois there, Ian would be out in no time, and he would probably just give Lorena a light warning and shake of his hand. Ian knew of Alois's habit to let non-murder crimes slip through with minimal punishment, among other things.
At the mention of coffee, Ian nodded to Lorena. Sure, he'd go. It'd be more to sit and let Makel eat things she probably shouldn't, but the kitten won the hearts of everyone. Besides, he was starting to like Lorena. He enjoyed the company, at least. There weren't a lot of people that would mess with him, especially with his lack of talking. Alois - impeccable timing, as always - came back with Ian's bag and set it down next to him, smiling down at the kitten.
"You're free, Ian. Do you want a ride?"
He could hear a muted snort under the mask. It was a question that Alois already knew the answer to. Scooping Makel up and unzipping the bag so that she could sit within it and poke her head out, he shook his head no. He gave Alois a small wave and started to the door, stopping to wait for Lorena before exiting. Alois looked back to Lorena. "You're free as well. The hazmat shouldn't be too long, but I wouldn't go immediately home. Don't do it again, alright? My good word only goes so far. Do you need a ride anywhere?" Alois waited patiently for an answer, his hands behind his back. [/blockquote]

Lorena's face brightened more than it had already at the yes. "Perfect! I know a great place around the corner from here we could talk at. Or, well. I could, I guess." She said, her blunder doing nothing to her cheery disposition. Lorena was quite enjoying having someone to talk to. Most people made a point to avoid her ramblings, with good reason. It probably wasn't long before she'd start rambling about something inane and conspiratorial.
With the knowledge she was released, Lorena jumped up. "Thank you so much, Alois!" she chimed. "There's no need. I'm going to go to coffee with Ian and Makel. Thank you anyway, though. Have a nice day with your police stuf... and maybe talk to them about those chemicals? I'm a scientist, you know. You're a bro. Bye!" With that, she skipped off to follow Ian. "Follow me, I know exactly the place."

Alois couldn't help but give a chuckle as Lorena skipped off. He gave her a small wave but didn't say anything more, watching as Ian turned and followed Lorena off to whatever place she had in mind. He turned around and went back to work, talking with the men around him.
Ian followed Lorena out of the police station, his hands in his pockets, Makel keeping her head up and out of the backpack to look around. It would be a lie to say Ian was not glad to have a new friend in this city. And someone who enjoyed explosions as much as he did was just perfect. Ian felt that she and he would get along well enough in the coming months.
