The coffee shop on 27th was nearly hidden, squished between one bank and a shady pawn shop. Inside, the decorations were sparse and the people whispered quietly. Someone read poetry about death on the stage, but no one seemed to be listening. Lorena recieved many glares as she entered the shop. Clearly, she was no one's favorite regular. With a bounce in her step, she settled into a corner of the shop and waved Ian over. "This place doesn't have much, but it's nice!" she said, a little louder than most patrons. At the sound of her voice, the strangers looked away, involving theirselves again in their own conversation.

Ian followed Lorena into the coffee shop, looking around as he walked in. He had never been inside of this shop before. He noticed the glares Lorena received upon entering, but thought nothing of it. He was getting plenty of stares himself, most of them almost malicious. The patrons turned their gazes away as Ian walked past, following Lorena. He sat across from Lorena at the table she sat at and let Makel onto the table, where she promptly sat and, after a minute, laid down. Ian pulled a pad of paper and a pen out of his bag as well, then set the bag down on the floor next to his foot. He would write whatever he wanted to say rather than try to sign. It would be much easier.
He wrote a short note to Lorena in his messy cursive, then showed it to Lorena, hoping she could read his scrawl. "So what did you do? Must have been something relatively minor for Alois to let you go after sitting you down."

Lorena left her seat to get some coffee for the two of them and a slice of cake for Makel. The orders went fast, and she returned quickly with them, setting them out. She smiled. "I don't know if you drink it, but it's cheap enough anyway."
She took the note to read it, holding it up a little to catch some light. The place was remarkably dark. "Well. I've been buying some chemicals lately that... haven't come from the best sources, I guess? I used to work at the university, but apparently I was a liability." she shrugged, setting the paper down. "So he came to ask me about them, or something, and then my experiment blew up and he took me in to fill out paperwork while the haz mat people cleaned up my house. Mildly toxic fumes. No biggie, I've dealt with worse." Honestly, the experiment she had been conducting should have been done under a fume hood to begin with, but Lorena didn't quite believe in fume hoods. "How about you? What'd he bring you in for?"

Ian gave Lorena a small thank you wave as the cake was set in front of him. He tore off a small piece and offered it to Makel, who gobbled it up greedily. She loved sweets, though she probably shouldn't eat them. It was a good thing Ian did not get out too terribly much or the kitten would be fat. Ian eyed the coffee, seriously debating it for a moment, but then decided against it. It would involve taking his mask off, which he had no desire to do.
Ian couldn't help but give a small snort of laughter as Lorena explained what happened. He thought it was funny. Chances were good, depending on what she ordered, the materials had been cut with sand or something. It was hard to get good chemicals off the black market. He fed another small piece of the cake to Makel as Lorena asked him what he was brought in for. Scribbling away, he answered her in another note.
"Alois didn't. Random cop did. Explosion in a city building. Wrong place, wrong time. " It was Ian that had caused the explosion that brought him in, but Lorena did not need to know that. He was sure she had overheard Alois when Alois had spoken to him at the station, but he did not feel like he should mention it unless she brought it up first.
